Tongva carvings? Can we get an expert opinion ...

Sphinx, Garden of the Gods, Chatsworth, Calif.

Anyone know what Tongva carvings look like? The carvings in the rock area seen above, on the south side of Sphinx, have been referred to as ancient Native American carvings, but I've never seen convincing evidence one way or the other.

Here's a closer look. I can easily make out a fish and a horse, but that doesn't mean they're actual ancient carvings. If they are in fact Native American in origin, then they're almost certainly attributable to the Tongva.

This angle might bring out the horse a little better, just to the right of the fish. It's hard to duplicate the three-dimensional qualities that surface when viewing them in person, but the set of carvings includes a number of other images that are harder to see than the fish and the horse.

Sphinx is easy to find in Garden of the Gods, and if you can find Sphinx you can find the carvings.

The Tongva occupied much of what is now Southern California — including the San Fernando Valley and the land that later became the Iverson Movie Ranch — for thousands of years before the Spanish missionaries arrived in the 1770s. You may be interested to know that many of the place names in use in the region are Tongva in origin. Among them: Topanga, Cahuenga, Tujunga, Pacoima, Cucamonga and Azusa — even though many of us were brought up to believe Azusa stands for "everything from A to Z in the USA."

If you're interested in learning more about the Tongva — and getting the real lowdown on the history of, among other things, the Iverson Movie Ranch, long before the glamour days of the movie business — I can point you to a few books offered by Amazon to get you started. Another interesting find. I wish I had noticed that when I was there. If I was to place a guess, I would have to say it is the result of a bored production crew member amusing himself between takes. It has been my experience that if they are in fact authentic ancient carvings, the entire area would be off limits and declared sacred, and then surrounded by a fence, never to be touched again. Always a pleasure! Rick

Interesting theory, Rick ... and a good point about the area being off limits. The feedback I've been getting leans strongly toward the carvings being non-indigenous in origin. (In other words, fake.) Most of the explanations I've heard blame it on teenagers. One fairly reliable source said the carvings go back to circa 1900, and even that source added that it was "probably teenagers." I suppose the idea of teenagers having nothing better to do is not new. Maybe it was Tongva teenagers!

The entire world was covered in a pre historic pre flood civilizations ruins that people like klaus Donna have been researching and uncovering evidence of what appear to be global ruins and a global cover up just like they've found ruins on the moon and Mars that even the previous chief ASTRO physicist at the nuclear Observatory at Annapolis- Dr. Tom van Flanderen along with former JPL & NASA scientists and former astronauts have all come forth and declared is beyond a million millions to one of a reasonable doubt the work of intelligent beings. This is just one example of many and one can only assume they have reverse engineered advanced weapons and transportation technologies not to mention possible zero point energy resources and technologies. The evidence to support an ongoing cover up from numerous reputable sources is indeed out there and one only has to look. People who believe this awe mocked and called tin foil hat wearers etc etx and the fact is that it has been revealed that one of the government, NSA & CIA's most successful Psy ops has been the besmerching of believers and their reputations through personal attacks through official channels then the media which were eagerly picked up on by the public at large and their very friends neighbors, work colleagues and even family members specifically. Until we stop being so closed minded and looking at new information and new theories as the enemies and throwing stones at those of us forward thinking and brave enough to think outside the box we will be stuck in this old paradigm. However the tide is already turning as it only takes three percent of a popilDion to start a revolution wether in thinking or government and in this case polls show that the flat earthers and backwards looking among us are already hopelessly outnumbered an being left in the dust by those of us eager to embrace a new paradigm which is already dawning. Cheers! & as my hero hunter. S Thompson says: mohalo!

The huge block with the flat face on the ground in front on the carvinga was on the ledge. The block was removed and the remaining flat face was chiseled creating fake pictographs for a movie set. That is what Joe Iverson used to tell us back when he was alive.

Thanks for your comment — it's always interesting to hear what Joe had to say. I hope you'll post more comments about things you heard from Joe.
This post is from almost eight years ago now, and in the years since then I've continued to study the carvings, including seeing whether they're visible in any movies. I've come to the conclusion that the carvings weren't there until probably sometime in the 1960s, which rules out their being Tongva in origin. They were almost certainly put in place for a movie or TV show, but I have yet to find conclusive evidence as to which one.
The carvings can be seen, but not very clearly, in the Gunsmoke episode "Honor Before Justice," from 1966 (it would have been shot in 1965). They can also be seen in the 1966 movie "Follow Me, Boys."
If I ever determine which production was responsible for the carvings, I'll post an update.
Thanks again!
